others. he's still at large and police say he has access to multiple weapons and assault rifles. cnn's kyung lah is joining us from los angeles where the police chief is calling it extremely worry some and scare ree. what's the latest kyung? >> reporter: certainly scary for anyone connected to the police department in southern california. this is where today's shooting spree began but all of this, wolf, began earlier this week. the murder spree began on sunday with the double killing of a newly engaged couple, monica quan and keith lawrence, quan, the daughter of a retired lapd captain, the officer who represented christopher dorner in front of the police board that eventually fired him. dorner refers to quan's murder in his man guess stow. he writes, i never had the opportunity to have a family of my own. i'm terminating yours. self-preservation is no longer important to me. i do not fear death as i died long ago on january 2nd of '09, a date a few month after dorner was fired as a police officer. the lapd fanned out, launching 40 protection details throughout southern california. >

nervous here. >>> this is cnn breaking news. >>> we are starting with breaking news this morning. a sports world shocker. a shooting at the home of the blade runner, olympic and paralympic track superstar oscar pistorius. his girlfriend identified by the south african press agency as former fhm model, reeva steenkamp is dead. robin kurnow is following the story. what do we know right now? >> you know, it's all confused. everybody is trying to put together pieces of this pudzle. the police are being tight lipped about naming the shooter, though local media is widely reporting that oscar pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend in the early hours of this morning though police say they cannot confirm him by name. they have a 26-year-old in custody, that a pistol was confiscated from his home and this man will appear in court in the next few hours here in south africa. the reasons for this still unclear. although it is being reported that oscar pistorius might have shot dead his girlfriend because he believed her to be an intruder into his house. south africa has a very high crime rate and man
commercials. >>> this is cnn breaking news. >> we're going to switch gears here. at least eight people were killed and dozens injured when a tour bus struck a pickup truck and rolled over on a treacherous highway in california. this happened in san bernardino, 80 miles south of los angeles. the road is so narrow that rescue workers have had a very difficult time reaching all the victims there. what is the very latest here? >> well, this is what chp is telling us now. there are eight people confirmed dead. but they say they believe that number is going to change. meaning they will find out many more people died in this crash. also, we've had our own count here. about 27 people have been taken to five local hospitals. six are critical. some of those are children. my photographer and i walked up to the crash site about a half mile from here. it is absolutely stunning to see what happened here. it looks as if this tour bus flipped over at one point. much of it is caved in right above where the driver would sit. we understand people were ejected from the bus. in this crash scene you can clearly
